Russ, I have struggled with this question myself many, many times. The first I remember is the struggle with the decsion to enlist our senior summer, while many of our friends just a year older were phoning home from Kuwait. I'm still not quite certain I have the answer, other than a righteous burden for my country from the Great Commission, (...to the Jew first...=your brother/home?) and the example of Christ living firsthand in the midst of every man's struggle against evil. There is something compelling about patriotism that I'm not so sure is just a carnal emotion. I beleive it is a fulfilling level of biblical brotherly love and unity of spirit that emboldens people to do what is right when they would probably not have the strength to do so on their own.

Oh Rebecca, thanks for sharing that. That was a tough letter to read. And yet one of such hope that the Lord will be faithful. You have lived this story and He is showing His faithfulness to you, to sweet Kai, and to little Kate. Your story continues to grow and turn corners and it will be amazing to see where it goes. But one thing I know for sure--you will cling to the Lord. You and Russ have been, and I know with all my heart, you will continue. You two have been through the fire, multiple times, and I have to tell you again that your faith has inspired me and taught me over the years of our friendship. I am a better person because of yall. Love you and praying for you. And so very proud of you both.

Thanks, Becky, for clearing that up.

And the (real) person I was thinking of... well we had dinner together this week and really struck up a good conversation. Turns out we knew each others' names already!

Congratulations Russ! Someday, you will have the joy of explaining to her how special she is, and how her parents got to choose her. I was adopted and I still think that perspective made My relationship with my parents even more special. Best wishes.
